Hi friends! Here are the big updates if you’re reading fast. More in depth + book rec + cute dog pictures below!
Never Trust the Husband is out in ONE MONTH on March 5th! This is the book inspired by my early morning, in-the-dark runs, where I realized I could see in people’s homes, see what they were doing at 6am, with their curtains open and lights on. Then, (as I quickly looked away!) I wondered what kind of character would do such a thing on purpose. This book is the result! You can pre-order here (currently on sale for $3.99), or signed paperbacks will be available soon!
I’m doing a ✨bookish giveaway✨ - details below!
My next author event will be Saturday, March 9th, at Browsers Bookshop in Olympia, WA at 4pm. I will do a short reading, we will do Q&A and talk about all things bookish, there will be wine, and lots of good books to check out! My books will be for sale + I’d love to sign your copy!
I have a new weekly newsletter for the writers in the room! Click here to check it out or subscribe. My goal is to talk about the writing life: what a typical day looks like, lessons learned as I went from newbie to published author, how a full-time author actually makes a living, writing life balance + more.
Save the date: June 22 I will be teaching a writing workshop (how to write a novel!) in Dupont, WA. Details coming soon, sign up required.
The writing update is that I’m busy working on the next thriller! This one is based in Los Angeles, which is different and fun for me. I’m enjoying pretending to be somewhere with more sunshine! ☀️
Thank you to Browsers Bookshop for hosting me once again! Come say hi, have a glass of wine, get your book signed, and check out this amazingly cute local bookstore. It’s in the heart of downtown Olympia next to amazing restaurants, shops, bakeries, etc. (we usually make a whole afternoon/evening out of visiting!)
Giveaway!!!
Whew, it’s been a minute since I’ve done a giveaway, but I love sending books to people! Please note that shipping is ridiculously expensive, so this giveaway is within the US only unless you are willing to pay shipping overseas/out of country ahead of time.
Giveaway: Choose one of my books, and I’ll personalize + sign it and send it your way! Please note, if you choose Never Trust the Husband, I won’t be able to ship until March when I get my author copies. To enter, reply to this e-mail and tell me what book you’re most looking forward to coming out this year! I will choose a winner randomly on Sunday, Feb. 11th.
Are you a writer, do you want to be (or do you love reading about writing stuff?)? I have a newsletter for that!
Some of my earliest bookish memories include me going to my favorite authors’ websites in search of writing advice. Well, now that I’ve published a few books, gone through getting an agent + publishing deals, and learned (often the hard way!) how to write a better book, I’ve started my own newsletter/blog on it. So far, I’ve covered topics like how to be a good storyteller (not just a good writer), how to take yourself seriously as an author (because no one else will until you do), the ridiculous things I sweat when starting a new book, + much more. Click here to check it out!
Book Rec!
Today, I’m recommending TWO books! The first is Sara Read’s The Principles of (E)motion. Full disclosure: Sara is a friend of mine + a critique partner, which means we read early versions of each other’s work before it’s published. BUT I’m not recommending this book just because we are friends. In fact, one of the reasons I first became friends with Sara is because I adored her writing so much! This is her second book. If you love fabulous writing + a badass feminist mathematician + a little bit of a love story, this book is for you. Details below. Click here to order!
A smart, poignant novel perfect for fans of Lessons in Chemistry
“An incredible STEMinist read.”—The Honey Pop
Mathematical genius Dr. Meg Brightwood has just completed her life’s work—a proof of a problem so impenetrable it’s nicknamed the Impossible Theorem. Reclusive and burdened by anxiety, Meg has long since been dismissed by academia. Now everyone wants to get their hands on what she alone possesses—especially her own mathematician father.
Having grown up a prodigy in a field plagued by sexism and plagiarism, Meg opts for a public presentation so there will be no doubt of her authorship. But a panic attack obliterates her plans. In defeat, she goes home and locks away the only manuscript of her proof.
Then chance sends her the unlikeliest of allies: Isaac Wells—carpenter, high school dropout, in trouble with the law. And the one love of Meg’s life. Fifteen years ago, they did little more than hold hands. Now, they find a tenuous space where they can love and be loved for who they are as adults.
But when Meg goes to retrieve her proof, she finds it missing. Her fight for the achievement of the century will test the limits of her brilliance and the endurance of two vulnerable hearts.
The thriller I’m currently reading is May Cobb’s upcoming THE HOLLYWOOD ASSISTANT. This author grows with every book, I swear, and each one is better than the last. I haven’t finished it yet, but I cannot put it down. Details below + pre-order link.
Offered a dream job in Hollywood with a famous director and his actress wife, an insecure woman becomes their personal assistant where their secrets and lies place her in the crosshairs of a murder investigation.
Cassidy Foster is heartbroken, stuck in life, and getting a little too obsessed with plants. Then when a well-connected friend becomes sick of Cassidy’s moping and gets her a gig with famous Hollywood couple, Marisol and Nate Sterling, Cassidy jumps at the chance to move to sunny L.A.
The Sterlings are warm and welcoming. A perfect couple. All Cassidy has to do is be available a few hours a week for errands. In return, she has access to luxury. Designer clothes. A sparkling pool. Great pay.
When Nate takes interest in her, asking her to read scripts he’s written, Cassidy thinks this could be the key to kickstarting her writing dreams. As their business relationship grows, so does their attraction. Nate is sexy, talented, and Cassidy can’t believe her luck. Clearly, Marisol doesn’t know what she has. Maybe that’s why the two are always fighting when they think Cassidy isn’t around.
But Cassidy learns she was hired for a different purpose. The Sterlings aren’t the perfect couple. Marisol isn’t the perfect wife. And when one of them is found dead, Cassidy becomes the perfect suspect.
That’s it for now! Thanks so much for joining me here, and don't forget to reply and enter the giveaway! HAPPY READING! -Jessica
